I’ve been listening to your album and I absolutely fell into its world. “15 Years Later” really stayed with me as the melody, the arrangement, the emotion, everything about it is beautifully crafted. “Wolf Tales” has such an infectious groove and the spoken-word flow adds such a cool character to the track. And “The Lake”… I kept going back to it again and again, so moving and beautifully shaped.
The special guests are fantastic, and the musicianship all around is extraordinary. Barry’s playing really stood out to me, and the blend of horns, vibraphone, and electric piano is stunning and so tastefully arranged and recorded with so much soul. You’ve captured emotion in such an honest way throughout the album.

I had a listen to BATIK–actually twice– and the first thought I had was, wow, what a beautiful tribute to Pat Metheny!
I could hear so many Metheny influences in this album, from the haunting ENIGMA, to the more energetic Keep it Movin’ (straight out of American Garage ), and the extremely beautiful title track Raw Sienna. What a fine fine ensemble, Tom. I really do hope to hear more from you.
Charu Suri
————————————————
And Raw Sienna by Batik is fantastic — I could definitely hear the Weather Report and Miles Davis inspiration, yet it carries its own unique identity and flow.
Neil Nayyar
————————————————
Hello Tom! Batik is FANTASTIC taking jazz/fusion to the next level. I loved Keep It Movin’ and Rock Dove Dilemma those chords are wonderful and the title track too!
Laurie Larson
————————————————
Batik Raw Sienna is incredible. Music is fantastic and the mix is incredible. Enigma is hauntingly beautiful. I love the harmonies.
I’ve not heard of John Roggie. What a great pianist!

Thanks for sending your FYC. I haven’t thought of Weather Report in a while! I can hear why you mentioned them as an inspiration for your group. My professor was a big fan and introduced me to them when I was a music composition major in the 90’s. I’m going to send him your album link. I think he would really like it too.
Enigma was my favorite track. That simple piano opening is beautiful, and the way it grows from there until the windchimes – it’s just lovely. Although I also loved the opening chaos in Lycosidae. Very cool the way it calms even with the irregular meters. And the bass (synth? tuba with effects? right about 3’30”) was unexpected – and I love instrumental music that can make me laugh at times. Great stuff!
Marty Long
————————————————
I’m listening Raw Sienna, very cool recording! ……the interplay is delicate and strong at the same time. I love it! Thank you for sharing as well
Radhika Vekaria

The Rock Track Dove Dilemma is amazing and the percussion is shining in it.
Mehdi Rajabian
————————————————
Dave man this great! The drummers I admire are those who are able to mesh with the music, as opposed to trying to make the music into a vehicle in which to show off. Everything I’ve heard from you shows great skill in complimenting the music along with first rate drumming! This project is no exception dude! Great band, great playing, great compositions…I’m now a fan!
Yo Dave, I wasn’t blowing smoke up ur ass re: Batik. Raw Sienna is fucking brilliant dude! I it’s become my go to when I want to hear fresh, creative music…which is most of the time. Do u guys ever gig? If so lemme know cuz I’d love to check it out. Meanwhile keep it up my fellow drum dude, ur killin it!

Been enjoying the music on this lovely 11 track album by Batik. From the opening notes of “Thang” to the ending with “The Lake”, it was a lovely listening experience with this style of jazz fusion that I absolutely love.
The drums by Dave Anthony and bass by Barry Hartglass add a solid foundation for the rest of the music, complimented beautifully by your work on percussion and vibraphone. The trumpet (and flugelhorn too if I hear well) by Tim Ouimette is lovely. Along with the bass, the beautiful piano work by John Roggie helps establish the harmony really well and the piano solos are also quite remarkable (a memorable one that comes to mind is on “New Day”). My favorite tracks at this time are “Enigma” with the delightful laid back groove and “Keep It Moving” (the high energy groove and soprano saxophone work is awesome) and “Rock Dove Dilemma” that has my favorite groove. Also enjoyed the guest features by Dan Willis on sax and Ian Smith on the guitar.
The compositions are lovely and the arrangements are superb. Great performances all around and everything sits so well in the stereo field of the mix.
Thank you for the music Tom. And I really mean it. Given that the majority of my work in recent years has been in the realm of Contemporary Jazz (where I have had the opportunity to not just work with but also learn from artists like Jeff Coffin, Fahir Atakoglu, Jordan Rudess etc.,) I tremendously enjoyed this album from Batik.
Was a pleasure to support you and the team at Batik.
Regards
Arun Shenoy

Second, your own Batik album, Raw Sienna, is filled with thoughtful, intricate pieces that deserve many listens. So far, my favorite is “Wolfe Tales,” a very catchy, needless to say, complex tune that grabs attention. Congratulations on an album with so much musical diversity and innovation.
Best to all your Batik team and to Syreeta as well!”

Enjoyed listening to Raw Sienna, the compositional depth and performance are outstanding. Amazing musicianship and the arrangements are brilliantly executed! Each instrument brings its own vibrant voice, yet everything comes together with incredible cohesion. ‘Keep it Movin’, ’15 Years Later, ‘Lycosidae and ‘Wolf Tales’ are among my favourites. I’d love to experience the band live, absolutely love the album! ❤️
Wouter Kellerman (Grammy®-award winner)

Congrats also on Batik! It’s a foot-tapping (Thang/Rock Dove Dilemma), grooving (Wolfe Tales), and somber (Enigma/The Lake) enjoyable listen from start to finish.
You’re fabulous on the multiple horns, and Dave Anthony is killin’ on the drums. It’s my pleasure to support your submissions.
I have moved them from the “listen” list to the must vote list.
🙂

I dug into your band’s album, Raw Sienna. Wow! I’m so impressed with how tight and together things are. Rock Dove Dilemma has such a good vibe, and as soon as the album started with Thang, I was hooked. I’m equally impressed with the contrast within the album; your band can produce such a wide spectrum of sounds and colors; the more spacious and colorful tunes are so well done. I really loved the title track – that plucked repeated sound at the beginning with the percussion colors is so so nice.
The musicianship on this record is top-notch across the board. And of course, my ears can’t help but notice all of the intricate percussion sounds happening – kudos!
And your arrangement with Syreeta is also beautiful. I love how you can be part of such a rad album and also make such a soft and gentle arrangement. It speaks to your diversity as an artist. Very inspiring.
This was all so nice to listen to, Tom. Congrats my friend!

Your group, Batik was refreshingly presented, and I enjoyed the excursions performed by various instrumentalists. Reminded me a bit of the days when I worked with Willie Dalton and the Dalton Gang, although Batik is much more adventurous in its rhythmic freedom. Very enjoyable. Thanks again for sending, and as always, best wishes.

I’ve noted your projects, and I’d like to support your works. Best wishes.

What a great record and right at the top of my list. Enigma is gorgeous with its shifting harmonic colors, beautifully voice-led and the melodies are stellar. Love the ECM vibes on the title track as well.

What a rich and beautiful album. Every element arranged and played so beautifully. The title track was so ethereal and mystical with that rattler contrasting against the elegant piano. Then Wolfe Tales was so powerful and confident I couldn’t help but get carried away. I will find it in Contemporary Instrumental.
Madi Das

Hey Tom!
Both of these projects are incredible!! Congratulations! Wow, where to begin?? Raw Sienna is so baddass and so rich! I love the Miles and WR influences. What virtuosity and kinetic energy! ָEnigma is completely enchanting…What a fantastic journey you take on Lucosidae! The song Raw Sienna is another favorite. So refreshing to hear such vitality and precision and discovery! Thank you!!!
Lily Haydn
——————————————
I think the Batik album is a winner! It’s one of the few entries that really has made an impression. Made me think about how much I listened to Michael Brecker’s solo albums like “Don’t Try This At Home” and “Now You See It….”
James West
——————————————
The Raw Sienna album, I really like Enigma a lot. Reminds me of Shadowfax. The recordings are very well recorded, lovely compositions and balance of instrumentations. I will definitely consider. I am wondering where you did your mastering. It’s really nice!

Just wanted to say great work!

I was totally unaware of Batik. What a great band! I love the music and how much thought and discipline went into the performances and the recording/production. There is a plethora of beautiful colors that are so tastefully put together. Great sensitive improvisations with an appropriate proportion to the written material. Your wonderful splashes of percussion, in addition to the vibraphone, provide a welcome “spice” to the “meal”. It’s so easy for players to overplay and clutter in this type of ensemble. The restraint of everyone is magnificent. When each player does contribute an idea, every statement is perfectly placed. The result is a mesmerizing and intriguing sonic experience with excellent pacing. Tim’s arranging is a wonderful complement to what you and Barry created compositionally. Congratulations to you, Barry, and everyone in the band! I hope this project, at the least, garners a nomination. It is truly deserved.
Best regards,
Rich DeRosa

…when I heard Batik, you offered so many styles and featured different players. Kudos! I think today I was drawn to the reflective tunes like “Enigma”, “New Day” and “The Lake”. Such tasty chord progressions! I loved it!
Thanks for reaching out and you should be proud of these projects!!

Raw Sienna is slick and obviously played by excellent musicians all around. Your drummer did a great job of driving the tune with that funky, infectious rhythm. Good job my friend!

Hi Tom,
…loved Thang!
You will have my support, and glad to help.
Thanks for sending,
Hal Selzer
————————————————
I listened to most of Raw Siena and was so impressed how adept and gifted you are in all of the styles you explore. The music is without question entirely original and skillful, but goes way beyond that in expressing a gamut of real emotions through music, especially the nostalgia of “15 years Later” and the melancholy and solitude of “Enigma,” to which I listened several times and reflects my real concerns of this enigmatic moment. I feel that you aptly chose the album title with the dream-like beauty of “Raw Siena” and its sensual impressionistic character. Definitely a hit!
I feel the playing is superb throughout. I really loved the sensitivity of your percussionist who supports the music but never dominates, a real plus in this music.
So many reasons to say you have my vote for your two submissions to the Grammys. I hope they’ll open up their minds, ears and hearts to the integrity of what you’ve accomplished.
My best,
Bill Trafka

Hi Tom, thank you so much for sharing your album ‘Raw Sienna’ with me! It is fantastic ! I could listen to it all day everyday. Such a cool vibe and amazing musicianship from everyone on your excellent compositions. Your percussion is right on. I truly enjoyed every track but especially love “Keep it Movin’” and “Wolfe Tales”. Your voiceover and the line “piano in his mouth” made me smile! I will be keeping Raw Siena on my list for Cont. Inst. Album and on my personal listening list way beyond Grammy season! I am honored to be of support and wish you the very best of success.

Batik sounds especially cool- I’m a huge WR & Miles fan.
Cheers

————————————————
Tim, what a great album! I listened to it on Spotify. And man, you sound great! Shades of Kenny Wheeler on this track. Collectively, it’s a great band…building on VSOP, Steps Ahead, Jaco, late Miles, Passport, & a nod to Brecker Bros. etc. This is some cool shit my friend!
Also
It’s ‘really’ good Tim. And the writing is stellar! I don’t know anybody out there doing this kind of concept. Would love to hear you guys perform live.
Bob Thompson
————————————————
I listened to Batik and really enjoyed it. “Enigma” was quite mesmerizing and meditative, even in the jazz space and the whole album sounds like it was a true delight to record. I see that Dan Willis was on sax for this – I’ve known him for a long time and played a lot of Broadway shows with him.
Great to hear your music and I’m happy that we’ve connected!
Kirsten Agresta-Copely

Hi Tom, I haven’t come across an album with this level of artistry since Weather Report. It’s truly wonderful, and I’m adding it to my favorites. Congratulations to you and your whole team!

The Raw Sienna album is super cool! Love the organ and horns. Very tight. What are you playing in it? Great grooves and funk and then a nice shift with Enigma. Cool percussion in Second Line Crossing. I’m also partial to that horn and organ sound as my parents played that all the time, so love Rock Dove Dilemma. Wolfe Tales also is very nice! Congrats!

Barry, this is fantastic. I’ve only listened to your two tunes so far, but I have to say that, without being at all derivative, it reminds me of listening to some of my favorite jazz records — in the realm of Steps Ahead, Michael Brecker, etc — in terms of composition and musicianship. Kudos, man! Looking forward to hearing the rest.
