During the course of composing for TV, film and music libraries, composers Barry Hartglass and Tom Nazziola felt that their collaborative music was begging to be performed live. In fact, it was one of their library pieces, “Grey Ghana,” that inspired the question: “Why don’t we form a group that performs this kind of exciting, colorful, exotic, multi-cultural music with a classical/jazz twist?” And so Batik was born in 2007. The result was an innovative ensemble made up of 5 composers/performers with a very unique chemistry, who expressed an interest in blending the music of jazz, classical, various ethnic cultures (and anything else they can find) to take the listener on a sonic journey‚ always wanting more. Imagine a modern Weather Report sound with a hard, ethnic edge.

Batik’s members have achieved many accomplishments. Members have performed with a wide assortment of famous artists and groups including Ashford & Simpson, Ray Barretto, The Count Basie Orchestra, Michael Brecker, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ray Charles, Kenwood Dennard’s Jaco-Fest, Tan Dun, Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, Gloria Gaynor, Bebel Gilberto, Ben E. King, Gerry Mulligan, Keith Richard, Patty Smythe, The Temptations, They Might Be Giants, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, and John Waite, to name a few. As composers, their collective writing accomplishments include music for ABC Sports, BET, CBS, CNN, Discovery’s FitTV, ESPN, Gatorade, Lincoln, Mercedes, NBC, NCAA College Basketball, Porsche USA and Subaru, as well as commissions from the American Composers Forum, Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, New Jersey Youth Symphony, VocalEssence and more.
